Winter blues are hitting hard today. Curses. I thought I had escaped it this year.

Really procrastinating today. Still feeling flu-y and all that jazz. Also distracted by thoughts and wild imaginings.

In other news, I bought a perfect dress.

Gotta love little "too cool for school" goth kids.

Baby goth shop assistant at a store I went to on the weekend gave me the up and down look and suggested that I could find the shoes I wanted elsewhere. The tone expressed perfectly what she meant when she said "there are plenty of really nice shoe stores on King street".

So I gave her the most irritating "hello kitty", 14-year-old-on-pills smile I could manage, tilted my head to the side and said a saccharine sweet thank you.

Shop assistant at Industrial Strength was much better.

My, my, that was fun. Despite reminding me of all the things I am not. It took me back...

Neil Gaiman is in Tasmania.

He is also going to be back in Sydney next week doing some signings and talks. Unfortunately there have already been 450 people RSVP for the Tuesday night on which I wanted to attend. There are no more spaces.

Darn.

sinboy is trying to start a discussion group for men to talk about feminist issues, privilege, what they have trouble seeing, when they've screwed up, how to improve, &c. I think it's a pretty awesome idea. If you're interested, you should go check out his post and get involved!

Also, pass it along.

This is kind of relevant, as today I was about to post about a comment I had received during the day. I was out at a "getting to know you" lunch between my department and the central IT area. I had been chatting to one of the bosses there about various things. During the conversation, we started talking about the IT area having a training department again, which he thought was a fantastic idea. Whereupon he said "A couple of ladies could run it nicely".

He probably thought he was being massively complimentary to the skills of women. (I couldn't resist coming back with the comment "but a couple of gents could do it half as well", to which he replied "not likely".) Yet there was the assumption that this was a function performed by women, a kind of comforting, soft function. Not the serious stuff that men do, but very important all the same.

That experience is not quite the same as that which sparked sinboy's thread. But it is kinda up there. Would love it if you people could drop by and look.
